Mission : Back to Basics- Beginner Friendly Products
With all of the products that are on the market and all of the new methods of seeing those products, many of us are in an information overload. Thus, it is difficult to decipher what is a necessity for you ,especially as a beginner. Hopefully this post will make it a bit easier to find your basic makeup must-haves.
A Stable Foundation:
*Bare with the products not being pictured in the order listed. I'm instead listing them in order of how you would apply them.*
-Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless Liquid Foundation
Great for those of us with oily skin and also comes in a Dewy hydrating formula for those with dry- normal skin.
Comes in 24 different shades.
A smooth foundation application is a key ingredient to the rest of the face coming together.
-MAC Studio Finish Powder Foundation
A quality pressed mattifying powder is any oily gal or guys best friend.
This particular powder is also buildable and can offer sufficient coverage on its own if your skin doesn't require a liquid foundation- or if you're in a time crunch
-MAC Film Noir Blush
For most beginners a powder contour is all you need as you explore your face shape and what
you'd like to minimize through contouring. MAC Powder blushes are easy to blend and come in a variety of shades.
Film Noir is one of the deepest shades however, if you are of a lighter skin tone try Blunt or Raizin.
A more cost effective alternative would be the IMAN powder blushes or Cover Girl Queen Collection Ebony Bronzer.
-Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit
This product is pricey however, you are getting 4 different shades and the pans themselves are comparable to the size of a MAC Blush. Well worth the money so that you'll have access to a variety of shades to play with that will also last you a long time.
-Urban Decay De Slick Makeup Setting Spray
A setting spray is NOT a necessity for everyone. However, if your skin does tend to go from oily to extremely oily throughout the day, as mine does, I suggest giving a mattifying setting spray a try. The Urban Decay De Slick is one of my favorites and comes in different sized bottles at lower prices. NYX and E.L.F cosmetics also have setting sprays that work relatively well at controlling oils.
As far as lippies go, I am definitely a lipstick girl. But whether you're into liquid lipsticks or glosses you can never go wrong with these colors.
Brown Girl Nude: MAC Strip Me Down
It took me years to find my perfect brown girl nude. Something easy to throw on that goes with everything. Though I have many versions of "nude" to incorporate in my collection I've found my perfect nude, no matter the brand, must incorporate a peach and a red undertone.
Perfect Pink: MAC Modesty
Creamy/ Muted pinks tend to be the colors I gravitate toward most. It pops against my skintone but is also soft and simple.
True Red: MAC Ruby Woo
In my opinion, every woman should own a staple red lipstick. It instantly make you look more pulled together when you need to look fancy in a rush. Ruby Woo has been a favorite of women of color for years and I believe it is well worth the splurge for a red that looks timeless and provides long wearing color. Since purchasing this lipstick, I do not own any other red shades in my collection.
As Far as the Eye Can See:
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade and Brow Wiz in Ebony
I've yet to find another brow product that I love more or as much as the Anastasia products to get my eyebrows up to par. There are other brow pencils and Pomades on the market however, these are hands down my favorite. Try your hand at pomade/gel and pencil products and see which one best fits your need. I like pencils for precise brows- more simple and clean for every day and pomades for bold brows for going out or any where that I'll be taking photos.
MAC Cosmetics Quad
- MAC Arena- Any peach toned color with a bit of sheen will give you a strong brow bone highlight without making being a harsh powdery white or cream color. Arena in particular glides like butter on my skin.
- MAC Brown Script- An absolute staple for women of color is a red/ rust toned matte transition color. When I don't feel like doing a lot on my eyes I'll just fill in my brows, and apply some of this color in my crease area for some warmth.
-MAC Brown Down- A deep chocolate brown color will give the eyes effortless definition and can double as an eyebrow shade if you are in a pinch.
-MAC Bottle Green- If you are feeling a little daring or sassy having one bright color that compliments the staple brown shades will give you just enough variety without overwhelming you. Greens and purples tend to be my go to shades.
Broadway Demi Wispies
Many brands make a version of Demi Wispies. The lash is as natural as natural can get. It is shorter on the inner corner and gradually builds in length as you go across the lash band. Whether I'm going to work or dressing up for a girls night, these lashes get me right.
Tips and Tricks
1. Know your skin type and skin tone. Getting to know your skin tone and type thoroughly is crucial to finding the products that will work best for you.
2. Find someone whose skin tone and skin type are similar to yours and consult them when you're in the market for new products. Whether it be a blog, Youtube, a close friend always have someone who can help you navigate the crowded makeup highways.
3. Practice!! Products sometimes can be tricky to work with however, give products at least 3 attempts before you rule them out. See if the way that you apply something makes it work differently than the way someone else applies the same product. Get samples and try things without wasting your hard earned money.
That being said, these are my favorite beginner friendly products. I tried to take price point and practicality of these products into consideration. These are products that I see as universally user friendly for women of color, have great quality to them and are also easy to find.
Hope You Enjoyed. Stay Tuned for Next Week's Mission!!
